29 imagesThe Bagsværd Church by Jørn Utzon was completed in 1976. Though not his most famous work, the church is an example of the architect’s inventive work at a different scale. Utzon designed the church with an unassuming exterior that merely hints at the stirring forms he created inside. The Bagsværd Church was Utzon’s first work after returning to Denmark from Austrailia and the Sydney Opera House, which he designed. It is located on the northern outskirts of Copenhagen in a suburban setting. The church stands almost unassuming as a simple, modern structure amidst birch trees, with its back to a local street. But when you enter, it will mesmerize you. We visited it in January 2013 and are completely fascinated.

6 imagesCabo Pulmo Park is located just 60 miles north of Baja’s tourism epicenter, Los Cabos. This jewel of the East Cape region of Baja California Sur stretches five miles from the northernmost tip, Pulmo Point to the southernmost tip, Los Frailes. Surrounded by undeveloped desert and a stunning mountain range, the pristine beaches of Cabo Pulmo Park give way to a shallow bay that cradles one of three living reefs (the only hard coral reef) in North America. For many years, this precious place went unprotected. But through the tenacious efforts of the Cabo Pulmo community, in 1995, the waters offshore from Cabo Pulmo were designated a National Marine Park by the Mexican government.

114 imagesRoughly speaking, Petatlan is known for three things: typical Mexican street scene, the church, and its gold market. The city was founded in 1550 and was previously inhabited by Cuitlatecos, Chumbias, Pantecas & Mexica tribes. “Petatlán” comes from the Nahuatl ‘Petatl’ (Petate: The woven from the fibers of the Palm) and ‘Tlán’ (next to) meaning then: “Next to Petate”. The story of the “Holy Patron of Petatlan” comes from the 1500s, when a statue of Christ complete with a cross was found in the Petatlán River. This was considered a miracle by the locals, and the Church of the Father of Jesus de Petatlán was built to house the statue. The city suffered an earthquake, which called for a reconstructed church today that is both a modern and classic design in the heart of this small town. On August 6 the town celebrates the day of the Holy patron.

14 imagesMission San José del Cabo The Jesuit Nicolas Tamaral established the Mission of San Jose del Cabo at the Pericú settlement of Añuití in 1730. But in the summer of 1734 Tamaral, who the Pericu shamans felt was overly impinging upon their long-standing luxury of having several wives, was martyred in cruel fashion and the mission was destroyed. Today the mosaic above the façade depicts the fateful day. The mission was finally closed in 1840. Set directly on the wonderful town square the Mission of San Jose del Cabo Anuití is not only an important historic place, but also a place where the community still celebrates its faith and fullness of life with passion indicative of its colorful history.

47 imagesAgave, photographs taken in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Photoshoot for ESCAPES magazine, issue #7, July - November 2011, for the featured article on tequila. Agaves are succulent plants of a large botanical genus of the same name, belonging to the family Agavaceae. Chiefly Mexican, they occur also in the southern and western United States and in central and tropical South America. The most familiar species is Agave americana, a native of tropical America, the so-called Century Plant or American aloe (the maguey of Mexico). The number of years before flowering occurs depends on the vigour of the individual, the richness of the soil and the climate; during these years the plant is storing in its fleshy leaves the nourishment required for the effort of flowering. During the development of the inflorescence there is a rush of sap to the base of the young flowerstalk. In the case of A. americana and other species this is used by the Mexicans to make their national beverage, pulque; the flower shoot is cut out and the sap collected and subsequently fermented. By distillation a spirit called mezcal is prepared. The leaves of several species yield fibre, as for instance, Agave rigida var. sisalana, sisal hemp, Agave decipiens, False Sisal Hemp; Agave americana is the source of pita fibre, and is used as a fibre plant in Mexico, the West Indies and southern Europe. The flowering stem of the last named, dried and cut in slices, forms natural razor strops, and the expressed juice of the leaves will lather in water like soap. In India the plant is extensively used for hedges along railroads. Agave nectar has been used as an alternative to sugar in cooking. (agave definition www.wordiq.com)

126 imagesSeries of photographs in this gallery was taken at Capella Pedregal Hotel, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. Capella Pedregal is a newly opened (July 2009) luxury hotel in Baja, focused on unsurpassed client service and offering the best amenities and treatment. LA76 team was invited to experience heavenly delights on earth in newly opened Capella Pedregal Hotel in July 2009, and then through our regular visits to this stunning Cabo San Lucas resort. The resort is one of a kind. Very private and intimate - you can access it only through the only privately owned tunnel in Mexico, Dos Mares, but yet it is the only luxury hotel & resort of this scope, located just 5 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas. LA76 team was able to experience and capture the best of Baja California Sur and Mexico. Capella Pedregal and the whole community of Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas represents the best of the Old World with the most advanced amenities and services. The team participated as well at Capella Pedregal's Easter Champagne Brunch, held at Don Manuel's restaurant, and photographs of it you can see in the gallery as well. Their cuisine under the guidance of the Executive Chef Marco Bustamante is superb.

43 imagesA visit to Zhongdian county or Shangri-La County, a primarily Tibetan county in northwestern Yunnan Province in southwest China and the capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The county was formerly called Zhongdian County (Chinese: Zhongdiàn Xiàn) but was renamed in 2001 after the fictional land of Shangri-La in the 1933 James Hilton novel Lost Horizon, in an effort to promote tourism in the area. The local Tibetan population refers to it by the name Gyalthang. "Shangri-La" or "Zhongdian" may also refer to Jiantang Town (Jiàntáng Zhèn), the capital of the county. (Source: Wikipedia) We visited Zhongdian town in December at the time of festivities at the Songzanlin Monastery. After Zhongdian we visited Lijiang and Dalí, two towns in Yunnan province, China.
